Sharak cursed in frustration as the lights went out. One second, he was on the verge of triumph, watching Richard Campbell’s anguished face as Firouzeh was tortured. In the next he was blind and could see nothing in the pitch darkness. He was sure Campbell was close to breaking. If they could have revived Firouzeh and crushed a few more of her fingers, perhaps just one more finger and perhaps not even that, then Campbell would have talked. Campbell would have bleated all he knew.

“What has happened?” Jamail’s startled voice sounded loud in the darkness.

“The allied bombing,” Sharak snapped. “The Western dogs must have hit our main power station again. Find me some light.”

Sharak leaned back in his chair and waited, listening to the sounds of Jamail and the others blundering around in the blackness. More shouting and cursing was now audible from other parts of the blacked-out building as more officers recovered their wits and hunted for torches.

Sharak swore again, using all the filthy expletives he knew to describe the parentage and characters of the British and American pilots circling their warplanes above Baghdad. How could he conduct a serious interrogation in darkness. If he could not see his victim’s faces he could not read their pain, their hopes, their deviations. He could not tell if they were truly broken or lying, or how much they might still be concealing. He needed to see their faces.

He simmered for a minute or more and then a beam of light flashed as Jamail found a torch.

“What do we do now?” Jamail asked as he shone the torch on their prisoners. Campbell was slumped with his eyes shut, tears squeezing out from his eyelids to mingle with the blood on his face. His body was shuddering as though he was suffering a minor fit. Firouzeh sagged unconscious.

The usual procedure would have been to revive Firouzeh and continue. Sharak considered pursuing the interrogation by torchlight but it was not satisfactory.

“Take them back to the cells,” he decided. “We will continue tomorrow.”

Jamail ordered the two attendant policemen to unstrap Firouzeh and pick her up. He moved to the door and shouted for more help. When two more police officers appeared they were ordered to move Campbell. Led by the jerking beam of Jamail’s torch they all moved out of the office and headed for the cells.

Sharak sat in darkness for a moment and then hunted in his pockets for his cigarettes and a lighter. He lit a cigarette and took a few breaths of smoke. He contemplated the tiny flame and the glowing end of his cigarette. There was no point in sitting here in the claustrophobic darkness. His office still stank of sweat and fear. He decided to find his way out of the building and finish his cigarette in the street.

Using the small flame of the cigarette lighter he found his way out of the office and turned down the corridor. Other men were doing the same and twice he bumped into stumbling fools and swore at them as he passed.
